Touch-a-Truck

The Westside YMCA hosted a fund raiser last Saturday. They closed down 64th street and had a bunch of different trucks parked along the way - a fire truck, police car, school bus, ambulance, a Fresh Direct delivery truck (Fresh Direct is grocery delivery), ConEd Truck (ConEd is the local power company), backhoe, street sweeper, and several others. Kids (and kid-like parents) could climb into the trucks, play with the controls, and, of course, honk the horn. Given that two of Jack's favorite books include pictures of trucks, that he points out every truck like vehicle on the street, and that his current favorite toys are trucks (well, actually they are a police car, a taxi, and a tour bus - for now, all classified as "trucks"), we thought this event would be a hit.

Overall it was. Jack seemed to enjoy steering the big trucks and playing with the controls. He was a bit overwhelmed by the number of people and the noise - there was a lot of noise - especially coming from the Con Ed truck. The horn was loud...really really loud.

In the middle of all the trucks, there was an area for musicians to perform. While he didn't bust into his regular bouncing and shaking, Jack did enjoy the music. Just for the record - "music" is a new word in Jack's vocabulary.

Later that afternoon, we headed to Central Park. Some nice people let us play with their hula hoops - it was fun.

School Projects

Jack has a school project due this Friday. The project is to visit a specific historic landmark in the city and then put together a write-up about the visit and place. Jack's location is Hamilton Grange which was the country home of Alexander Hamilton. We visited a few weeks ago (yep, we've have the assignment this long). Finally, Jack started putting together the project today. OMG, it was like watching me from 30 years ago. There was denial and defensiveness, then came tears and finally he produced really good work. If this is what the next 15 years are going to be like, we are in trouble. Also - sorry Mom, I know I tortured you with this experience many many times.
