The Rockaways

A few weeks ago, Justin took Jack out to the Rockaways for a day of fun in the sun! It was a fantastic day - here's the story from Justin....

The morning started with one of Jack's favorite activities: taking public transportation. They took the subway down to Wall St, then walked over to Pier 11. Jack talked the entire time and was so excited to see all of the ferries coming and going from the pier. They caught the SeaStreak ferry which goes between Wall St and the Rockaways. The ride includes great views of the lower Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Governor's Island. It also passes under the Verazano bridge and by Coney Island. So much for a little boy to take in!

After they arrived at the Rockaways, they went to Mike's (one of Justin's friends and colleagues) where they met Mike's family. Sarah is his youngest (6 years old) and became Jack's playmate for the day. They played with lots of cars and toys and even jumped on a trampoline.

Mike lives a few blocks from the beach. His house was severely damaged by the hurricane (though still standing - check the water line picture). His family moved out for several weeks while the house was repaired.

After getting settled, they packed up a cooler and headed to the beach where they spent the rest of the day. Jack mostly played with Sarah in ocean and the sand. Best of all he had lots of snacks and count them 1, 2, 3 ice creams.

Jack loved going into the water and had many people to take him including Mike's older kids (teenagers) and nieces (and of course Justin!)

At the end of the long day, they took the ferry home again. Jack crashed on the ride. He was in good spirits and talked non-stop when they got home. A very fun day.

School Projects

Jack has a school project due this Friday. The project is to visit a specific historic landmark in the city and then put together a write-up about the visit and place. Jack's location is Hamilton Grange which was the country home of Alexander Hamilton. We visited a few weeks ago (yep, we've have the assignment this long). Finally, Jack started putting together the project today. OMG, it was like watching me from 30 years ago. There was denial and defensiveness, then came tears and finally he produced really good work. If this is what the next 15 years are going to be like, we are in trouble. Also - sorry Mom, I know I tortured you with this experience many many times.
