The Fourth

The morning of July 4th, we were all watching Good Morning America. When the show flipped to the local weather, our local guy said that all rain would clear up by late afternoon. I honestly thought he was crazy based on the prior two days. I expected a washout and lots of time inside.

To avoid spending all day inside, we headed out for a bike ride. We headed north, riding all the way up to the George Washington Bridge. Spencer and Jack kept us entertained with calling out all that they saw (boats, barbecues, Fairway, lost Citibikes, and the Amtrak trains) and, with Spencey, singing his favorite songs.

Once we reached the GWB, we checked out the Little Red Lighthouse (picture below - there is even a children's book about the lighthouse) and did boy things like throw rocks into the river. We also realized how fast the river flows because we were so close!

Next, we headed back south, stopping at a great new (or likely recently renovated) playground called Discovery Playground. It had a cool water feature and, the real highlight, a zip line. The zip line was the right height for Jack to use all by himself. Regardless, both boys loved it.

As the day progressed, I was shocked that the weather did indeed clear up. And it stayed cool - much cooler than the prior days. Our plans for the evening were on: we were going to Staten Island to the Staten Island Yankees game!

We took the subway to the Ferry, which in itself was a treat for the boys. On the train, we had a true NYC experience. At the next to last stop, a family of four gets in our car. The youngest boy, smiles at Jack and then says "Hi Jack!". Jack replies "Hi Kyle!". Turns out, these two were in camp together that summer. We enjoyed meeting Kyle's family as they were also heading to Staten Island.

The baseball stadium is right beside the Ferry terminal. For a single-A minor league park, it has amazing view of the lower Manhattan skyline. We enjoyed the game. Jack got into all of the stats and loved the program for the game. Spencer kind of paid attention to the game, but really enjoyed the bouncy house set up by left field.

The real fun started toward the end of the game, when Jersey City and then the Macy's fireworks show started. We could see both, though off in the distance. I personally loved this part. The baseball park had its own fireworks display as well - but those were more loud than impressive.

Regardless, it was a great evening and a very fun fourth!

The bottom picture is the view from our seats: Jersey City fireworks on the left, Macy's NYC fireworks on the right, World Trad Center is the tallest building. You can also see the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Not bad for a minor league park (or the Fourth of July).

Spencer Time

A few recent pictures of Spencer. He is growing like crazy and picking up all sorts of new skills like grabbing toys on the playmat, grabbing blankets or clothes and shoving them in his mouth, and his new favorite pastime, putting his feet in his mouth (with or without socks!).     Learning all the tricks on his first flight. We lucked out and got an extra seat for his carseat (ok, I lucked out, but still...)  Sleepy times with Grandma    Enjoying a new toy!   Such a big boy

Called up

This weekend, the t-ball team was short a few players. Spencer was called up from the practice team to fill in. He was one of the smallest on the field, but played well, even teaming up with Jack for an out!

Growing up

Jack and Spence "graduated" from their respective preschool programs in the last couple of weeks. While the road along the way wasn't always the smoothest, the outcome couldn't be better. At Spencer's 2s club event, the kids demonstrated all the new skills they had learned in the gym. Lots of forward rolls, big jumps on the trampoline, and amazing core strength. The kids then enjoyed their favorite book of the year: mean soup. Afterward each child received an award. Spencer followed Jack's footsteps on this part by refusing to go up to accept the award. Regardless, we were so proud of Spence. He loved having his independence, being involved in a class, making new friends, and just having fun. Next year Spence starts preschool at the Y. Jack's tender care graduation was last friday. The event was held in the Little Theater at the Y. Jack was so excited to be on the stage. The class sang several songs ending with what has to be the anthem of kids 3...
